Norwalk,
Connecticut Forty-Nine Day Street builds on the conceptual basis created by adjacent "Fifty Day Street," a building for which we received an AIA Connecticut Design Award in 1987. Situated in the heart of an area that is undergoing urban renewal in South Norwalk, this building serves as further proof that there is something new happening in SoNo. Thirty-nine low cost residential units are situated over 10,000 square feet of first-floor office space. A four story central atrium creates an arrival experience usually reserved for more expensive addresses. This project responds to intense budgetary constraints, which is observable through the development of extremely efficient units, an elegant structural system, and the use of basic building elements (windows, heat pumps, grills, and doors) as major design elements in a synthetic stucco facade. The bold, simple, and colorful forms give the building a childlike quality and a sense of whimsy. Services |
