Honorable Mention

Rowayton Village House

The architectural design of this 2,200 sqft home was rooted in early Connecticut vernacular traditions. This work rebels against the excesses that have characterized the contemporary residential built environment, and is directed towards a rediscovery of the simple pleasures of home.

Located in the village of Rowayton, the house is built on a pre-existing foundation. The floors and doors are crafted from recycled white oak, which endow the interior with a patina of age. The white plastered walls and absence of interior wood trim gives the house a soothing quietness. The open kitchen is the center of the house, anchored by a zinc-topped island. The living area flows out to a garden oriented towards a fireplace and swimming pool.
